Iceland - Monument to the Unknown Official/Bureaucrat

Monument of the Unknown Official/Bureaucrat
Reykjavik, Iceland
As a bureaucrat myself, I was especially excited to see this monument. This is now one of my favorite statues of all time. From the Frommer's website:

"In the courtyard behind Lækjargata 6 is The Unknown Official. Several countries have monuments to the Unknown Soldier, but perhaps only Iceland has a sculpture honoring -- and lightly satirizing -- the thankless, anonymous job of the bureaucrat. The 1994 sculpture by Magnús Tómasson depicts a man in a suit holding a briefcase, with his head and shoulders subsumed in a slab of unsculpted stone."

Unfortunately, the courtyard where this statue lives was closed during my visit. Nothing but telephoto shots and no head-on pics. I'll take what I get, though.

Iceland - Geysir

Iceland - Geysir
The word "Geysir" comes from this location right here, in some unpronounceable national park in Iceland. A stop here was part of the Golden Circle bus tour I took. I'm sure my wife knows the name of the park (I'll have to update this later).

Seeing this Geysir, which spouted steam every 5 minutes or so, pockets of steam popping up throughout the park, and puddles of boiling liquid--it was eerie and cool. And it smelled a bit like rotten eggs.

Iceland - Geysir, Mineral Pool

Iceland 2010

This photo was taken at the site of the first named Geysir, a place of Icelandic "Olde Faithfuls" spouting off every few minutes. There are a lot of minerals a miscellaneous in the water that bubbles to the surface.

For this shot I will not tell you if I shot it from a helicopter tour or if it is a tiny pool that I am just standing by.

About Me

My Photo
Minneapolis, MN, United States
Photographer/Artist based in Mpls, MN. I have a studio in the NE Arts District--Studio #274 at the Northrup King Bldg, 1500 Jackson St NE. I photograph elements of nature to explore color, shape, and composition. My goal is to capture images of the nature around me in a way that explodes (or seaps) with beauty. If that nature is in a vacant city lot, all the better. (All images Copyrighted. Use permitted with permission).
