Photograph v. Painting / McGraw v. Kitchel

McGraw Parking Lot Weeds Photograph #43
and
Karen Kitchel's painting of Parking Lot #9

I saw Karen Kitchel's paintings on Artnet.com. I was checking my stats and her paintings showed up in the same search as my photographs. I like her painting, I'd buy it. But would I pay $4,800 for it at the Robischon Gallery?

I do not understand pricing in the art world. I don't get it for paintings and I don't get it for photography. With photography, I can at least estimate my framing costs when putting a price on a photo. For an 18x18in of the photograph on the left, I'd probably charge between $300 and $400. Karen's painting the same size is $4,800.

One-of-a-kind / Unlimited equal reproductions.

All of my future photographs will be numbered runs of 5 or 10. My framing will be nice, too, and reasonably priced.

And I'm just going to take good photographs from now on. Deal?

Hudson Hospital Exhibit - 8/2009

Hudson Hospital

20 photographs of mine are on display at Hudson Hospital in the maternity ward. The opening reception was last night, so if you want to see these photographs now, you will have to either have a baby or visit someone who is.

This is truly the most beautiful hospital I have ever seen--the gardens, the rooms... There is original art in every room. How awesome is that! I can tell you that North Memorial does not do that.

Hudson Hospital - Exhibit and Reception - 8/14/2009

Two images on display at Hudson Hospital
(August 2009 - November 2009)

I am happy to be a part of this healing arts exhibit, and proud to be in such good exhibit-company--Lindsy Halleckson will be showing her paintings in the hospital as well. 12 artists in all will be displaying for the next 3 months. If you want to see any of my work during this time you might want to consider having some minor surgery there or visiting someone who is.

There is a reception this Friday (8/14/09, 6-8pm). Find directions here.

I'm not familiar with most of the artists who are showing at Hudson Hospital, but the hospital has a reputation for being a bit daring. For instance, a corporate consultant I work with who does a lot of art placement in medical facilities told me to stay away from anything with branches--it reminds people of veins. Well, this is exactly what I showed Hudson Hospital when they selected my work.

And even more daringly, they chose to exhibit the cremation urns of Bradley Royce. Urns in a Hospital! Nice.

Public Art in North Minneapolis - Dupont and Broadway

Banner featuring North Minneapolis Artists
Ethyl and Lamont at the bus stop. (My Exploding Crab Apple photograph and headshot are in the center photo)
Banners and other forms of public art are currently being used to spruce up vacant buildings in the developing area of Broadway Ave.

Special thanks to the Northside Arts Collective for coordinating the display. It's an interesting way to showcase Mpls artists and showing the varied type of work being created locally.

About Me

My Photo
Minneapolis, MN, United States
Photographer/Artist based in Mpls, MN. I have a studio in the NE Arts District--Studio #274 at the Northrup King Bldg, 1500 Jackson St NE. I photograph elements of nature to explore color, shape, and composition. My goal is to capture images of the nature around me in a way that explodes (or seaps) with beauty. If that nature is in a vacant city lot, all the better. (All images Copyrighted. Use permitted with permission).
